Updating firmware on Creative MUVO TX FM
I have just upgraded the firmware on my Creative MUVO TX FM.
I found the correct file via this guide from Creative. When I started the setup I got the message “please put device in recovery mode before running firmware update”… I could understand what it means, but how do you do that?
After a little searching, I found a hint: Creative actually provide an easy step by step guide, but it is well hidden. Just below the “Download Now” link you use to download from, there is a “Show details” link. Press that, and after the usually compatibillity notes and “you loose all your data if you format the device”, you get the following (quote from the 6th of may 2006):
- Download the MuVoTXFM_PCFW_LF_1_19_01.exe file into your local hard disk.
- Connect your player to your computer.
- Double-click the firmware upgrade file.
- When prompted to set your player in Recovery mode, disconnect your player from your computer.
- Press and hold the Play button while connecting your player to your computer’s USB port.
- Continue to hold the Play button for about ten seconds after connecting your player to your computer.
- Release the Play button when the Find New Hardware dialog box appears on the computer screen.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to install recovery drivers for your player.
- Double-click the firmware upgrade file and follow the instructions on the screen.
When following the instructions, a dialog asked me to provide a file named StMp3Rec.sys
. Actually it just asked me to insert “InstallDisk”, but when I pressed the button to select the file myself I got that file name. The Install CD that came with the MUVO did not provide the file. Stuck again!
After a bit of searching a guy pointed out that the file was located in C:\WINNT\system32\
. Not in my Win2k Pro box! I searched for the file name, and it was located in the folder C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\
. I selected that folder, that install finished and I got to the next level of the firmware update.
When running the firmware update, I suddenly got a dialog with the message
. It turned out that the message is not an error. Just click OK and you get on to the upgrade dialog.“Media state is not initialized”
From now on it just worked, but with one of the usual funny glitches: You can select if you want to format or not with the update. I did not select that option, but when I started the update the formatting was required. It got the chance to cancel to back my data up, but I had already done that (always take backup before attempting anything like a firmware update), so I just told it to contrinue. And it worked.
